Travel> Need a break? Get adventurous
A good solution: escape for a week to an adventure sports camp.
We are sure your next two questions will be:
1. What if I am scared of heights or terrified of fast-moving mountain rivers?
2. How expensive is this option?
Worry not. Many professional adventure tour companies, which organise such activities today, ensure you are safe and comfortable as you enjoy the challenge of participating in a range of physical activities. You can even do this on a budget.
Interested? We bring you the lowdown and details of the packages available.
Popular adventure activities
Lt Col MK Munshi (retired), an avid adventure sport lover and a wildlife photographer based in Mumbai, guides us.
River rafting
A raft is a floating platform constructed by tying a series of logs together. The logs are fastened with ropes and cross-wooden planks. The challenge is to guide the raft through the rivers using poles; these poles act both as a pedal and as a rudder for steering the raft.
Rock climbing
You need to climb a rock face with your bare hands, sometimes aided with long steel pins called pitons. For safety, a rock climber is secured with a rope around his/ her waist, which is belayed (tied to a peg) by another climber at a higher altitude to protect those who are climbing after him in case of an accidental fall.
Kayaking
A kayak is a narrow, light boat intended for one or two persons. Kayakers use a double-ended paddle that acts as a rudder as well as a paddle to take the boat forward and to steer it.
In kayaking, the kayakers take the boat through fast moving mountain rivers. They negotiate difficult sections of the river or rapids (an extremely fast-moving part of a river, caused by a steep descent in the riverbed) by carrying the boat on their shoulders and walking on the banks.
Safari
This involves driving through forest and mountain roads in a four wheel drive vehicle or specially-modified vehicles. You could also ride horseback or elephant back through the wild, crossing rivers and streams in the process.
Mountaineering
Mountaineering is a great challenge -- the more difficult the ascent, the greater the challenge. Mountaineers normally go in groups, roping themselves together, with one as the leader and others following. The rope acts as a safety prop, which protects a mountaineer. In case he/she slips or falls, the others are able to pull him back with the rope.
Trekking
This involves carrying a backpack and following trails in the mountains, forests, wild meadows and so forth. You get to be close to nature and halt only at the end of the day at a forest lodge or trekker hostel. You could even takes notes or photographs of what you hear/ see along the trail.
Skiing
This activity happens on snow slopes, where the skier uses 'long runners' which he/ she wears with special shoes. The skies, or 'long runners', are made of wood or composite material.
Rappelling
This technique involves rapidly coming down a cliff using a rope. The rapeller often uses a special harness and passes a rope between his legs and over his shoulder. He slides down the cliff by pushing himself from the cliffside while sliding down the rope.
Sounds tough? Yes. But beginners can attempt all these activities.
"The degree of difficulty is based on the capabilities of the participants. Our staff is also very vigilant. The general ratio is about one instructor per 10 participants," says Christine Patham, vice president Snow Leopard Adventures, a tour company that organises adventure sports activities on a regular basis. Amongst those who have attended camps by Snow Leopard Adventures include Hollywood actor Brad Pitt, mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev and Bollywood actor Milind Soman.
Other attractions -- wildlife
Most adventure camps tend to be located in very scenic places, so you can treat your eyes to some of the most beautiful wildlife of India.
"Spotting wildlife is an art. One requires immense patience and the ability to remain silent to be able to spot animals in the wild," says Patham. The most commonly seen fauna in a Snow Leopard Adventure camp are peacocks, barking deer, langoors and, on some occasions, leopards.
If one visits Camp Tusker, a Snow Leopard Adventure camp at the Rajaji National Park in Uttaranchal, one can even spot wild elephants, spotted deer and wild boar.
Personality development
"We all possess hidden strengths that we ourselves are sometimes unaware of, and these activities help participants gain confidence," says Patham.
In most adventure activities, the learning curve is similar to other human resource developing courses -- you are taken out of your comfort zone and pushed into the wilderness. Certain camps -- where they may have no electricity, no mobile coverage and no television -- are a drastic change from the usual city life. At camps, you learn to adjust to new situations and overcome your fears.
Schools, colleges, IT companies, BPOs, teachers and groups from the armed forces register for adventure programmes, hoping to go through the same learning curve experienced by college students and corporate executives when they go for events geared by character building and team building activities.
Equipment and gear
Most adventure tour companies are well-equipped for such sports and activities. You just need to carry your usual clothing and toiletries and, maybe, special clothes for rafting, ie synthetic tops and trousers for women. The rest is usually provided for.
The health factorMost tour companies lay down rules for people with certain health conditions such as pregnancy, asthma, heart trouble and so on.
"We expect participants to tell us if they are suffering from any ailment. Depending on that, we can adjust the difficulty levels and the type of activities for them," says Patham. Usually, adventure tour companies have qualified personnel, who are also trained in CPR and first-aid.
Adventure tourism and your budget
Adventure tourism is now picking up pace as against several years ago when it was not considered a sport for the common man -- people thought it was too dangerous or beyond one's budget.
Today, you are likely to find an activity that fits your budget. Just make sure you register with reliable adventure tourism companies.
You can tailor your itinerary and prices can vary depending on the nature of the trip you plan. There are special discounts for students and people from the armed forces.

Travel> Want to visit Shirdi?
The constant rat race of city life left my hubby and me longing for a break, even if it was for just a weekend. So we decided to head to Shirdi which attracts hundreds of Sai Baba devotees daily. People from all over the world visit his shrine to offer prayers of gratitude and seek his blessings.
The last time I had been there was with my parents 10 years back. Since we both enjoy driving long distance to see new places, we decided to visit Shirdi by car, which is not very far from Pune where we live.
How to get there
There are several ways to reach Shirdi -- hire a private taxi, take a long distance bus or train or drive down from Pune or Mumbai. You can plan a one-day trip or book yourselves into a hotel in Shirdi and make it a two-day trip to visit the temple.
Once you reach Shirdi, it looks like a small town bursting at the seams. There is a lot of noise, dust and pollution. As you near the premises of the main temple of the Sai Baba, you will find several people vying for your attention, trying to coax you into parking your car in their private parking lots -- for a fee.
After a little investigation, we got to know that there is no such temple-owned paid parking, but there is a parking area run by the trustee of the main temple, which is a stone's throw distance away. One can park there for a nominal fee.
You can buy coconuts, flowers, prasad, and chaddar for the offerings to the Sai Baba from several shops around the temple.
Inside the temple
I was impressed by the temple staff -- they are professional, and quite helpful. Deposit your shoes at the shoe stand, for a token of Re 1.
Photography/video shooting is not permitted in the temple premises, and the temple staff is quite strict about this rule.
When you stand in queue, considering it's a weekend, you may have to stand for about an hour or more, till it's your turn to come face-to-face with the pristine Sai Baba seated on his throne.
Even if you get a few minutes to pay your respects to the lord, I think it is really worth it.
You can donate cash by depositing it in the cash box inside the temple or there are separate offices within the temple premises where you can donate cash or kind. You can purchase the Laddoo prasad from a separate counter and can also wait your turn for the bhog (meal) offered at specific timings.
Quick travel tips
~ Carry enough water and snacks while you drive, as there are spots of complete desolation on the highway where you can see no one for miles. But if you do spot a small restaurant or dhaaba cold drinks and bottled water are the safest to have.
~ You could eat at the restaurant at Yash Palace, located on the main road in the city of Ahmednagar. Ask any shopkeeper for directions an he will direct you instantly as it is probably the biggest restaurant and hotel in Ahmednagar.
For just Rs 65 you get a delicious unlimited Rajisthani thali consisting of -- Daal Vaati, two-three kinds of vegetables, hot Phulkas with ghee, rice, Kaddhi, Dahi Vada, pickle, papad, and Moong Daal Halwa. This certainly is a treat, once you're driving back from Shirdi.
~ You have State Bank of India, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank ATMs in the city proper of Ahmednagar. There are several petrol/diesel pumps in Ahmednagar and on the highway, but these may not accept credit/debit cards. So, keep enough cash ready while traveling to such places.
~ The total distance from Pune to Shirdi is about 205 to 210 kms.
Pune to Ahmednagar: 120 kmsAhmednagar to Shirdi: 85 kms
~ When you visit Shirdi around this time ie early summer, make it point to buy a dozen of ripe guavas. They are simply delicious and much better quality than what you get in the cities.

Beauty> Complementing Make up with your Attire
Furthermore Professional make-up artist Ayesha Khan, says, "It also depends on how you carry yourself with the makeup." Sometimes, we can make a mistake with the combination and styles.
Earthy tones
For colours such as beige (a very light brown), browns and other earthy attire, you can apply mascara or kohl and a light brown matt or glossy lip colour. In fact, when you are wearing clothes in these colours, any colour will go well on your lips.
Pink/ red tones
For colours such as pink, red or orange, you can apply a little mascara and the lip colour can have a hint of pink. Even a light shimmering lip colour will go well. Whites/ off-white/ creams
For colours such as whites, off whites and creams, you can wear kohl/ mascara and experiment with any lip colour. Try not to wear a red lip colour, as it will look pretty odd on any complexion.
For shades of blue, you can go for kohl and/ or mascara. Your lip colour choices can include magenta, fuchsia pink, mauve and lavender.
Greens
For shades of green, you can go for kohl and/or mascara. Opt for a mauve lip colour in a matt or glossy finish.
~ Makeup is meant to enhance your looks and not make you look too artificial.

What you Must Know about Make up
The difference between a 'day' and 'night' look, how to make your makeup complement your attire, what to do once the party is over and more.
Professional make-up artist Ayesha Khan, who has worked with Gladrags models like Amita Hodkar and Deepti Gujral, and television stars like Gauri Pradhan (Kyunki... Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi...) and manages her own salon, Grace Beauty Parlour, in Pune tips us off.
First, cleanse your face
This is a must to remove any dirt and impurities from your face. It will also make you feel and look fresh.
~ Pour a few drops of cleansing milk into your palm and gently massage into your facial skin in a circular motion with your fingertips.
~ Then, with a damp cotton wool, gently remove the lotion in upward strokes.
~ Wash with a face wash and pat dry your face with a towel.
~ Do not apply any moisturising creams or lotions, as there are chances your face may sweat and it may ruin your look. This applies to all kinds of skin tones as you never know when the weather will play spoilsport and ruin your look.
Cleansers
~ Lakme Deep Pore Cleansing Milk, Rs 60 for 120 ml, suits all skin types.
~ Ayur Deep Pore Cleansing Milk, Rs 50 for 200 ml, suits all skin types.
~ Biotique's Burberry Lotion Face Cleanser, Rs 135 for 120 ml, suits all skin types.
Face washes
~ No Marks Soap Free Face Wash Gel, Rs 50 for 75 ml, suits all skin types.
~ Biotique's Pineapple Fruit Gel Face Cleanser, Rs 135 for 120 ml, suits all skin types.
~ Himalaya's Purifying Neem (soap free) Face Wash, Rs 45 for 100 ml, suits all skin types.
~ Blossom Kochhar Aroma Magic Grapefruit Face Wash, Rs 95 for 120 ml, suits all skin types.
Must-haves for the day
For daywear to office, lunch or a movie, keep your makeup subdued.
~ Use a translucent powder.
~ Go for sober earthy colours such as brown or nude shades of lipsticks. Nude lipsticks usually come in skin tones and lend your lips a classy touch.
~ Transparent lip gloss and mascara/ kohl will add the perfect touch to your face.
Going out tonight?
~ Irrespective of the makeup base you use for nightwear, apply glossy lip colours.
~ You can also experiment with shimmering blushers and eye shadows such as gold and silver.
~ Apply more of kohl and mascara to enhance your eyes.
Debdatta Das, a 22-year-old journalism student, pitches in, "For parties or while going to pubs, I generally use a liquid based eye shadow added to my kajal, and a shade of brown moisturising lipstick from Lakme."
"For casual parties," says Ipshita Dey Sen, a 28-year-old market research analyst, "it's mostly kajal on the lower and upper eye, compact, lip gloss, and maybe a light blush if it's a more formal party. I sometimes use a mocha coloured lipstick at night, but I mostly stick to a nude or a light pink gloss."
Removal of makeup
"It is very important to remove your makeup after you return home. Never sleep with makeup on your face. Makeup tends to block your skin's pores; as a result, as a result your skin will not be able to breathe freely and it may result in pimples," says Ayesha.
~ Apply a moisturiser by gently massaging it on your face; the moisturiser dissolves the makeup to a certain extent. Then, remove gently with cotton wool.
~ Use cleansing milk or a makeup remover and massage it gently on your face.
~ Remove the cleansing milk with cotton wool. This second round with cleansing milk will ensure a better removal of makeup from your face.
~ To remove kajal/ eyeliner and lipstick, massage with cleansing milk. Then, gently wipe your eyes and lips with cottonwool. Finally, wash your face with a face wash. You could also try removing the remains of your eye makeup with a moist wipe. Remember, the eyes and the area surrounding the eyes are very delicate and sensitive.
~ After you remove your makeup and cleanse your face, apply moisturiser again as, after all this cleaning process, the skin becomes dry, itchy and tends to pull. A moisturiser will soothe the skin.
Iphista tells us, "After a party and before going to bed, I generally use a Biotique cleanser and Dabur rose water."
As for Debdatta, she uses Himalaya's face wash for oily skin which suits her best in the sticky Chennai weather.
Even if you have not applied foundation on your face, you can cleanse your face in the manner as mentioned above.
Makeup removers: Revlon Eye and Face Makeup Remover, Rs 95, and Eskinol Naturals Cucumber Facial Cleanser, Rs 50.
How to buy makeup
"Always buy products that have been tested, are hypoallergenic (that is, the product is unlikely to cause any allergic reaction), are not tested on animals or contain animal products and are of good brands," says Ayesha.
~ Read the contents of the makeup bottle. Usually, products that are not tested on animals or which do not contain animal products mention it on the packaging.
~ Avoid cheap quality makeup products as they may ruin your skin.
~ Check if it is meant for oily skin or dry skin, whether the product is oil based or water based, and so on.
~ Before you purchase any makeup product, consult the sales executive at the beauty shop/ counter; they are trained in selling these products and can tell you what will suit you best.
Expiry dates
Most of the times, the expiry date of any makeup product will be mentioned on the bottle itself. Make sure you read the contents carefully before buying.
Here are some tips that should help you ensure the makeup you are buying is not old:
~ Old lipsticks will lack their usual shine and lustre. Also smell it, you'll notice a distinct 'stale' smell that is different from the usual aromatic scent of a new lipstick.
~ If liquid foundations are kept unused for too long, you'll find the water and the oil have separated in the bottle. Never go for such products. Don't use them if it's with you in such condition.
If your lipstick is old, it will not run smoothly on your lips. It will also dry your lips faster than the usual lipstick.
As for the old liquid foundation, it simply won't stay put on your face, thereby ruining the base of your makeup.
Skin types
Branded products are designed to suit every skin type. Such as:
Oily skin
A cake foundation or a compact will suit oily skin better than liquid foundation. Liquid foundations tend to make your face look more oily. The cake foundation should be followed by a compact.
Dry skin
If you have dry skin, you can safely use liquid or moisturising foundations. Also, some oil-based foundations have castor oil or olive oil in them to suit dry skin.
Combination/ normal skin
Those who have a combination skin tend to have a T-zone problem. The T-zone includes the forehead, nose and chin. This portion is oily while the cheeks are dry.
For such skin types, look for products that normalise your skin, such as those that contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) or fruit acids.
Apply compact or cake foundations for the oily part of the face and liquid foundations on the dry part of your face.
Usually, makeup for both oily and dry skin can be used on the face to create a balanced look.
Apply the makeup for oily skin on the dry areas of your face, while using the makeup for dry skin on the oily part of your face.

Health> Are you suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome?
Many of you have jobs that require you to work on the computer. These strenuous computer-intensive work conditions have given rise to what is known as Computer Vision Syndrome.
Dr Harish S Belvi, a practising ophthalmologist (eye specialist) based in Mumbai, says that this occurs "when there is a shortening of tear break up time. In other words, tears that form a defensive film over the eyes start drying up. This occurs when the eyes are open and looking into the monitor for too long. The tears evaporate from the eyes faster, causing the eyes to dry up." CVS could lead to various eye problems.
i. Eyestrain
Eyestrain, which is a common problem, mostly occurs when we are working on something for a long time without taking adequate breaks. It can be caused by activities such as watching television, working on the computer, reading a book or studying for long hours. In such cases, your eye muscles are working hard to help you focus.
During these times, your inner eye muscles tighten up, causing your eyes to get irritated, dry up and feel uncomfortable. In addition, lack of sleep, fatigue, poor lighting and an incorrect posture (such as slouching on your chair), can aggravate eyestrain.
Symptoms include a mild headache, coupled with irritated/ smarting eyes. You might also find it difficult to focus after a prolonged session of reading or looking at your computer screen.
Prevention: Apart from placing your monitor 25 inches away from where you sit, tilt it a little below eye level. How does this help? Dr Belvi says, "When your eyes are looking down at a lower level, they are opened less as compared to when you look directly into a monitor tilted at a higher level. Thus, keeping the monitor at a lower level helps minimise evaporation of moisture from your eyes."
Opt for LCD/ plasma monitors as they are more soothing, compared to cathode ray tube monitors. "LCD or plasma monitors are technologically more advanced. As a result, the pixilated picture quality and colour contrast are soothing to the eyes. Compared to that, cathode ray tube monitors are harsh on the eyes as they display focused light on the eyes," he adds.
You can also set the lighting and brightness of your monitor to a lower glare, as per your comfort level.
ii. Dry Eyes
This problem can be worse for those who wear contact lenses to work on a daily basis. Dry eyes occur when our blink rate declines considerably while working on a computer. More so since we are looking straight ahead into the monitor, as compared to desk work where we look down at our books/ files.
The very act of looking into a monitor without blinking results in tear evaporation. An air-conditioned office environment also contributes to this problem, dehydrating our eyes and causing them to itch.
Some of the basic symptoms of dry eyes are a feeling of dryness and irritation, a gritty/ grainy feeling in the eyes, a blurring of vision, redness, feeling a strain on the eyes, general stress, an intolerance to light, and headaches.
Prevention: Follow certain precautions like keeping a minimum distance of 25 inches from the screen.
Fix an antiglare screen on your monitor.
Take regular visual breaks lasting few minutes, at intervals of 20 minutes -- such as looking away from the screen for about a minute and then getting back to work. This will help your eyes focus better.
Blink your eyes several times so they are nourished with tears.
Use preservative-free re-wetting eye drops; these can be safely used even by those of you who wear contact lenses.
iii. Vision related headaches
Most of us have suffered from vision related headaches. These signal eyestrain and are usually caused by improper workplace conditions. Glare from the computer screen and poor lighting are some of the main culprits. Some of the main symptoms include headaches that occur mostly toward the front part of your head or forehead, and you finding yourself pressing the point between your eyes and upper part of your nose.
Prevention: If at home, have lemon tea. If at work, try a hot cup of tea, as it helps soothe headaches.
"The best thing is to get some rest for yourself and for your eyes," suggests Dr Belvi.

Health> Eye Care for Computer Users
Text by: Tanya Munshi
Most of our work is done on computers, and there is usually no escape from it.
It is a visually intensive task and, unfortunately, our work pressure and lifestyles do not give us the opportunity to be kind to our eyes. Which is why these tips should come in handy.
i. Know your eyes
Tears: The first line of defence, they also serve as lubrication by keeping the eyes moist and nourished; they also have a corrective lens function.
Eyelids: Their main job is to protect your eyes from dirt, dust and harsh light.
Eyelashes: A protective net for your eyes.
Cornea: A refractive zone that guides light to reach the retina.
Pupil: Controls the amount of light that enters your eyes.
Lens: A refractive zone that also guides light into the retina.
Retina and Optic Nerve: A bunch of intricate wiring that carries vision signals between your brain and eyes.
ii. Exercise your eyes
Dr Harish S Belvi, a practising ophthalmologist (eye specialist) based in Mumbai, says that regular work hours should be infused with short breaks. During such breaks, he suggests a small and easy exercise: "First, blink your eyes several times. While you keep your eyes closed, roll your eyeballs both clockwise and anticlockwise and take a deep breath. Gradually open your eyes while releasing your breath. This exercise lasts for a minute and you can repeat it three times before getting back to work." It serves as a good workout for the eyes.
iii. Look away
While working for long hours, look at distant objects either in your office or outside. Looking at a distant object and then returning to your task helps your eyes focus better. Try taking such visual breaks for about five to 10 minutes every hour.
iv. Palming
Sit straight at your workstation and rub your palms against each other till you feel them warm. The warmth of your palms helps soothe and relax tired eyes. Then, lightly cup your eyes with your palms and relax for 60 seconds. Count the seconds in your mind. Repeat this exercise two to three times whenever your eyes feel tired, or as often as you want. While palming, you can either rest your elbows on your desk or keep away from the desk and cup your eyes. Both ways are fine.
v. Splash water on your face
During breaks, splash water on your face while closing your eyes. This has an overall relaxing effect and helps you feel refreshed.
vi. Take a walk
After you're done with lunch, take a stroll outside your office for a few minutes. This will give your eyes a much-needed break and get them some fresh air.
vii. Use tea bags
Keep two used tea bags in the refrigerator before you leave for work. Once you are home, place the tea bags on your eyes for a few minutes as you relax. This not only soothes tired eyes, but also reduces puffiness.
viii. Drink water
Drink plenty of water. It helps reduce puffiness. When a person is dehydrated, especially in an air-conditioned office, the body starts storing water as a defence mechanism. This adds to puffiness around the eyes.
ix. Eat healthy
Incorporate Vitamins A, C, and E on a daily basis; eat citrus fruits, green leafy veggies, tomatoes, spinach, poultry and dairy products. Pack a box of chopped carrots, cucumber and fresh fruits and munch in-between meals at the office.
x. Know your contact lenses
"Ideally, a person who uses lenses should wear it for not more than 10-12 hours a day and occasionally for 14 hours a day," suggests Dr Belvi.
Never wear your contact lenses while swimming. The pool water houses various micro-organisms as there are several people using it. This may lead to fungal infections in the eyes. In addition, the chlorine in the water can damage your contact lenses.
"Lenses are like sponge, making them susceptible to attracting dirt," says Dr Belvi.
xi. Eye dos and don'ts
~ Visit your doctor
"One should ideally visit their ophthalmologist once a year, but if there is a problem with your eyes, visit sooner," suggests Dr Belvi.
In addition, before buying an eye-care product such as eye drops, always check the expiry date and don't forget to check the prescription. It is always advisable to visit your ophthalmologist prior to visiting your optician. Remember, your ophthalmologist is trained to detect several other eye related diseases, apart from the reading of your eye power.
~ Wear antiglare glasses while driving or at work
"Antiglare glasses are mainly used for focused light -- such as full beam car headlights -- and serve well for night driving. These can also be used while working on the computer," says Dr Belvi.
Using a pair of antiglare glasses while working on a computer can reduce the strain on the eyes to a certain extent. If you wear contact lenses, wear a pair of zero powered antiglare glasses for the same purpose.
~ Use re-wetting eye drops
An office environment that is predominantly air-conditioned, coupled with a computer intensive job, this is the perfect combination for dry eyes.
In such cases, you can use re-wetting eye drops to give relief to your eyes. Why? "When dry eyes occur, the aim is to get the tears back into our eyes -- whether it is naturally (by simple blinking exercises), or artificially (if the problem aggravates)," says Dr Belvi.
"Re-wetting eye drops have a similar in composition to natural tears. One should go for eye drops that do not have any preservatives. Eye drops with preservatives are toxic to the eyes in the long run. You can use re-wetting eye drops as and when required, but preferably span it to a minimum of four to six times a day. If the problem persists, visit your ophthalmologist as soon as possible."
The two most commonly used preservatives in all eye drops are Benz Alkonium Chloride and Chlorbutol. Read the contents of the bottle carefully and avoid eye drops with these preservatives.
~ Reduce your smoking and alcohol intake
"Smoking and alcohol consumption (either alone or combined) causes irreversible optic nerve damage. As both nicotine and alcohol are nerve toxins, they affect the nerves in the long run. Over a period of time, this can lead to poor or weak eyesight," warns Dr Belvi.
~ Never rub your eyes
If dirt enters your eyes, do not rub as this may cause the dirt to stick inside. "Blink several times to start your tears flowing; this will help flush out the dirt," advises Dr Belvi. "If you rub your eyes, the dirt particle will keep disturbing your vision and irritate your eyes. In such cases, seek your ophthalmologist's help immediately."
Quick tips
~ Shelf life
Preservative-free re-wetting eye drops have a shelf life of about a year, if the seal is unopened. Those with preservatives last around two years, if unopened.
~ Discard
All eye drops should be discarded within a month after opening their seals. Once opened, the medicinal properties tend to deteriorate due to exposure to the external atmosphere, making it unsuitable for your eyes
~ Protective eye gear
While driving, wear protective eye gear -- especially if you are wearing contact lenses (for night driving) or sunglasses with UV protection (for day driving). Make sure the gear covers the sides of your eyes as well.
Being healthy is a personal choice and one has to work hard at it. A balanced diet, regular sleep habits, a balance between work and rest, ad exercises -- all play a vital role in restoring our health and helping us maintain our eyesight.

Beauty> Get that Exotic Look
Do you sometimes wonder how some women wear their make-up so flawlessly? Professional make-up artist Ayesha Khan has some great tips to solve the mystery.
Ayesha has worked with Gladrags models like Amita Hodkar and Deepti Gujral, and television stars like Gauri Pradhan (Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi).
She manages her own salon, Grace Beauty Parlour, in Pune and writes on beauty and fashion regularly. According to Ayesha, every woman needs some make-up essentials to complement her features.
These could include:
Eyes: Kohl, eyelash curler, mascara, and eyeliner.
Cheeks: Blush.
Lips: Lip liners, lip-gloss and lipstick.
Face: Foundation, compact, and translucent powder.
You can combine and permute these products depending on factors like time, lifestyle, work profile, occasions and so on. For instance, Ipshita De Sen, 26, who works in a market research firm in Bangalore, uses just kajal, a compact, and lip balm for work, thanks to a hectic lifestyle and less time for fuss and feathers.
We start a new series to help you use make-up without wasting too much time. And, to begin with, your eyes.
Kohl/kajal
For that sultry, exotic look. This is a cosmetic preparation used to darken the edges of your eyelids. It belongs to the family of what we popularly call kajal and is applied on the edges of the lower eyelid.
~ It comes in several colours -- black, brown, blue and green.
~ Black kohl suits all complexions, and especially complements dusky skin.
~ Brown kohl suits wheatish complexions.
~ Shades of blue and green kohl suit all complexions.
~ "Women with fairer complexions can experiment with kohl of any colour," says Ayesha.
~ You can also use it as an eyeliner on the edges of your upper eyelid.
~ For that smoky effect, apply it liberally around the rim of your eyes. Make the lines thick, but be careful not too apply so much that it looks smudged. Feel free to ask your beautician to demonstrate how to use it once.
Recommended kajal brands: Lakme's kajal (Rs 25), Biotique's kajal ( Rs 100), ShaeyesTrifala Kajal by Shahnaz Hussain (Rs 300)
Quick tip: "Along with smoky eyes, it is best to just apply a transparent lip gloss," suggests Ayesha. The combination gives a very chic look to the face, and goes well with any kind of attire, be it for work or a night out.
Eyeliner
Your eyeliner defines the shape of your eyes. You have two types: liquid and pencil. "Keep liquid eye liners optional. If you don't have a steady hand, it can be a messy affair," warns Ayesha. So, if you do have a steady hand, go for it.
~ Eyeliners (both pencil and liquid form) can be applied starting from the left to right corners of your eyes.
~ When applying a liquid eyeliner, remove the excess liquid liner from the brush by dabbing it on the rim of the eyeliner bottle. Then slide the brush along the curve of the eyelid where the eyelashes begin.
~ In the case of a pencil eyeliner, hold your upper eyelid a little tight, so you can draw the line easily. Draw the line on the upper eyelid till you get the desired thickness. Try not to make the line too thick; it should be thin or medium so it blends with the curve of your lashes.
Recommended brands
Liquid liner: Lakme's Insta Liner (Rs 50-60), Revlon ColorStay ( Rs 259), Avon's Colour Trend (Rs 165) Pencil liner: Aviance's Hypnotique Signature (Rs 115), Chambor (Rs 129), Eye pencils by Lakme (Rs 12), Maybelline's Easy Eye Lining Pen (Rs 159).
Eyelash curler
"This is the most important beauty product you should have," says Ayesha. According to her, an eyelash curler adds to the curves and body of your eyelashes, enhancing the beauty of your eyes. It is used to open up the eyelashes and can be used with or without the application of mascara. You can pick any brand from a beauty shop at between Rs 300 and Rs 400.
How to use an eyelash curler
Step 1: First apply your eyeliner and wait for it to dry, so it does not smudge.
Step 2: The eyelash curler looks like a pair of curved tongs. Open the curler; hold it close to your eye until the curler touches the base of the lashes. The curler should not touch the skin above the eyelid.
Step 3: Carefully place your upper eyelash inside its mouth. Slowly close your eye and then open it in such a way that all the lashes brush through the curler's mouth. The mouth of an eyelash curler should always be held parallel to your eyelashes.
Step 4: Keep the eye open and slowly close the curler. Your eyelashes should spread out evenly across the upper mouth. Repeat with the other eye. Work with the curler gently so you don't pinch or hurt your eyelashes and eyelids.
It takes practice to get used to an eyelash curler. You can always ask your beautician to show you how to use it.
A word of caution: When the curler is closed on to your eyelashes, never pull it away from your face. You could harm your lashes by pulling them out! Patience is the key.
Recommended brand: Maybelline (Rs 230-300).
Mascara
Opt for a good volumising mascara. As the name suggests, it is used to darken and thicken the eyelashes. It adds body to your eyelashes, especially if you have thin or scanty ones. Other types of mascaras available are lengthening (to make the lashes look long), thickening (to make them look thick), long-wearing (used mostly for work from morning till evening), and waterproof (outdoors, where you run the danger of ruining your look while sweating or during the monsoons).
~ Mascaras are available in transparent (that can be used at all times) to shades of brown for daywear or a plain earthy look, and black or brown-black for more distinct lashes for a date, party or a wedding. They can also be waterproof. ~ Mascaras can be worn with or without kajal, kohl or eyeliner and to any occasion.
~ First finish applying the rest of your eye make-up. If you are using an eyelash curler, use it prior to using the mascara.
How to apply
~ Place the mascara brush right below the point where the upper eyelashes begin and gently move the brush in upward strokes to add to the curls of your lashes.
~ Apply the mascara brush very little on the lower lashes where you gently brush the lashes downward.
~ Wait for the first coat to dry, then apply a second.
~ Then go for the lashes on the lower lid and gently brush them in downward strokes.
~ With a clean tissue, gently dab your eyelashes to clean the excess mascara, if any.
~ Mascara can be used alone or along with an eyelash curler to enhance the curve.
Recommended brands: Revlon's Water-Tight Mascara (Rs 169), Maybelline's Curl Mascara (Rs 100)/Wonder Curl Mascara (Rs 159)/ Great Lash Mascara (Rs 109)
Quick tips
~ Most eye make-up products should be discarded at least eight months after usage, unless mentioned otherwise on the packing.
~ " Try and not share your eye make-up with your friends or even family, as you never know when you may transfer an eye infection, " says Ayesha
~ If someone does use your kajal or kohl, wipe gently with a tissue or sharpen it immediately.
Remember, your eyes are very sensitive. No matter what you do, be careful.

Hair Care> Hair Grooming for Macho Men
What do Johnny Depp, Hrithik Roshan, Antonio Banderas, John Abraham and Keanu Reeves have in common? They all sport, or have sported at some point in time, long hair.
Some guys do it to make a style statement; others just dig the long-haired look.
Ranjeet Pathak, 27, a producer with MTV, was inspired by model-actor Milind Soman's long locks. Ranjeet followed suit and grew his tresses.
Prachi Chaturvedi, a 22-year-old associate project manager, finds long hair attractive on a man.
It seems long hair is the way to go, so here are some grooming tips to keep your mane looking shiny, healthy and new.
Note: These grooming tips can be used for short hair too.
Hot styles
Though sporting long hair is a personal choice, longer locks suit men with a lean face and a muscular body. The latest trend for men is hair is worn slightly longer than the normal length.
"It's the outgrown style that can be gelled up and tied back. Use a styling product like a gel to get the right look. Massage the gel into your hair after towel drying it. Gel can be bought at any salon, supermarket or beauty store," says Anahita, professional hairstylist at The Gazelle, Pune.
"A textured, choppy, unkempt style also very in these days," Nitasha Shukur a professional hairstylist at Under The Tree at Thams Salon, Mumbai.
Check out Hrithik Roshan's new look in the John Players campaign. To get this look, just towel dry your hair and leave it to set naturally.
Cool colours
"Never colour hair at the front of the head. It should be more at the back not toward the forehead. If the colours are toward the forehead, it tends to make the person look old and garish," says Anuh Shiroor, a professional hairstylist at Salon Headlines, Pune.
Light highlights and warmer, richer tones such as mahogany, chestnut and honey suit dusky, wheatish complexions. Nitasha, in fact, vouches for shades of brown and mahogany.
Since colours and hairstyles vary from person to person, it's best to get a professional to check your hair and advise you as to what will look best on you.
"Platinum from L'Oreal is the latest in hair colour. This will suit men with fairer complexions," says Anuh.
"A lot depends on how you emphasise your long, coloured hair in the way you dress," she adds.
Grooming for your hair
Wash your hair with lukewarm water, followed by a cold-water wash; the latter shuts the pores thereby preventing hair fall. Men tend to wash their hair more often, leading to greater hair loss. It would be a good idea for them to use a salon shampoo.
"Salon shampoos are more moisturising and have a lower detergent content, " says Anuh.
"Usually any salon product is prepared after a lot of research and study. These products are just right in their properties. Also, hairstylists undergo a lot of training before they can style your hair or recommend which shampoo will suit you," says Anahita.
If you are in need of a good salon shampoo, just walk into a good salon, let a hairstylist check your hair type and recommend a shampoo which suits your hair. Salon shampoos range from Rs 250 upwards.
"When getting your hair cut from a professional stylist, s/ he can check the type of hair and scalp that you have and recommend the correct kind of shampoo and conditioner to be used," says Nitasha.
Leave-in conditioners, a good option
Leave-in conditioners, as the name suggests, is a product you can apply and leave in your hair; you don't need to wash it off! It is generally used after the hair has been shampooed, conditioned and towel dried or anytime during the day.
It is best used on dry hair and it works just as well for any hair type.
Anahita adds, "Some people may have hair that is dry at the ends but oily at the roots. In such cases, it is better to apply leave-in conditioners only in places where the hair is dry. This can be done after every hair wash."
Leave-in conditioners are not harmful to your hair so you can use them after your bath, when you are going out on a date or whenever you feel your hair is looking dry.
A valuable tip from Anahita, "You can massage it into your hair just before a swim. This prevents the chlorine in the pool water from harming your hair."
Choose from L'Oreal Liss Extreme Leave-in Conditioner (Rs 895 for 150ml), Clairol Herbal Essences Leave-In Conditioner (Rs 180 for 290 ml) and Sunsilk Naturals 9 to 9 (Rs 48 for 100 ml) combing lotion for both wet and dry hair.
Just take a bit of it in your palms after shower or any time during the day, massage into your hair, comb and the hair gets set.
Healthy hair habits
How often you wash your hair would depend on your lifestyle. If you are an outdoors person, you need to shampoo almost daily as compared to someone who spends more time indoors and may shampoo twice or thrice a week.
Sometimes, hair fall can also be a sign of a vitamin deficiency (Vitamin B) in your body. If you feel this is the case, get a blood test done and consult your doctor. S/he might suggest doctor you take B-complex tablets as a daily supplement as this can help prevent hair fall.
~ Get into the habit of wearing caps while biking, as too much wind is not good for the hair.
~ Don't tie your hair too tight as it can lead to traction alopecia or loss of hair on the head.
An invaluable tip: "Try to avoid using blue coloured shampoos as they are highly detergent based. Instead, use salon shampoos as they also condition and are not detergent based," says Anuh.

Dental Health> No Dates? Ward off Bad Breath
With such such an array of toothbrushes, toothpastes and other dental products flooding the markets these days, a shopping trip to the grocers might leave you totally puzzled.
Here are some tips on how to purchase dental products and practice oral hygiene.
Say goodbye to bad breath
~ The most common cause for bad breath is improper brushing. Food particles accumulated between the spaces of your teeth give off an odour.
~ The other reasons could be tartar and stains in the mouth, which result in increased bacterial growth.
~ Colds, coughs and sore throats are also reasons for bad breath, because the surrounding area in the mouth has increased bacterial content.
Thus, regular brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash should help reduce bad breath. And you should attend to colds, coughs, and sore throat quickly.
~ Bad breath can also be a sign of indigestion. So watch what you eat.
~ Try and keep a small box/container/bag in your office drawer with cloves in it. Every now and then you can pop in one or two cloves.
Keep the cloves pressed between your molars, don't chew. Let it remain in the mouth. Cloves helps you have fresh breath.
~ Sugar-free gum works too.
Dental hygiene at work
i. Avoid in between snacks -- just stick to a proper breakfast, lunch, and dinner regime. If you feel hungry, have an apple or pack a tiffin of sliced cucumbers and carrots and munch on them as and when your hunger pangs attack between meals.
ii. Drink plenty of water.
iii. Always rinse your mouth after meals.
iv. Try and keep a folding toothbrush and travel toothpaste in your office drawer or bag. You can always brush your teeth post lunch or dinner.
Even if you cannot keep toothpaste, brushing your teeth with water is good enough, as it will remove all the food lodged in the mouth.
v. Try and have a fresh fruit, which is fibrous, such as an apple, after lunch.
vi. Reduce your sugar intake in your coffee or tea during work hours.
vii. Whenever possible chew on sugar-free gum.
Home remedies
Dr Sonal Arora, a dentist who manages her own clinic in Mumbai, suggests some home remedies for teeth/gum trouble.
Pain: Sometimes cavities can cause a lot of pain and you cannot visit a dentist soon. The safest painkiller to take is Paracetamol. But follow that up with an appointment with your dentist.
But make sure this medicine is taken on a full stomach and do not take the second pill of Paracetamol until six hours later.
Bleeding gums: If have bleeding gums rinse your mouth with warm salt water. This gives a lot of relief.
Swelling: Avoid eating hot food. Place an icepack on your cheek in the area of the pain Do not use a warm compress ; it will aggravate the swelling. Avoid clove oil because these days refined clove oil is not available.
Selecting the right product
Selecting the correct dental product for yourself is as crucial as eating right and staying healthy. After all, every part of your body needs utmost attention and care.
Why leave out oral care? Dr Arora suggests some basic points to remember while buying oral care products:
i. Any Indian tooth paste or tooth brush should be Indian Dental Association (IDA) approved or if it is a foreign brand you can check if it is American Dental Association (ADA) approved.
ii. Toothbrushes vary from soft to medium, but never use hard-bristled brushes. Hard-bristled brushes will hurt your gums.
iii. Some people may have a space between their teeth. For such cases, use a brush with bristles which are at different levels or the zigzag variety.
Dr Arora further adds, "There is a new product which will be soon entering the Indian market called an interdental water pick. Dental product dealers or any custom notified and duty free shops [stock it]. Oral-B is soon coming out with this product. It costs about $25 abroad, which should be about Rs 1,106.
How does a water pick work?
The water pick is a device, which helps you clean your teeth better. You need to fill it up with water, which comes out in a jet at a high speed to dislodge all the particles in the spaces between your teeth.
It comes with multiple tips; hence your entire family can use it. You can follow this by a regular mouthwash.
"The water pick can be used daily, morning and night, or as often as you want to or is convenient to you. It has no side effects and but mind you, nothing can ever replace a tooth brush, " concludes Dr. Arora.
Dental care for kids
Teething is a natural process whereby milk teeth emerge. This process starts when your child is six months to about two years old. "Oral care for children should start right from the time their first tooth appears," suggests Dr Kulkarni.
~ You can apply toothpaste on to your fingertip and gently rub their teeth and gums.
~ "You can use a finger brush. A finger brush is a small rubber brush, which can be worn on your finger. You can then gently clean your child's teeth in circular motion. It is always good to start oral care and hygiene from a young age, " says Dr Arora.
~ Apart from brushing, morning and night, get your kids to cultivate the habit of rinsing their mouth with water after every meal or snack, especially after eating chocolates. It is a habit which has to be inculcated from young age.
So what are you waiting for? Follow these basic rules and tips for a healthy set of teeth and gums, and dazzle the world with a great smile.

Dental Health> Dazzle with your smile
Rahul, a 20-year-old, final year science student was sitting in a caf with his buddies. He saw a pretty girl walk in. He flashed his pearly whites and vice-versa. Instant chemistry? No she smiled to reveal a very ugly set of yellow teeth. As shallow as it may sound, Rahul was grossed out.
In another incident, Reshmi, 27, a financial advisor with a bank, is dreading her 11 o'clock meeting with a client. She has met him before. When they sit in his air-conditioned office talking across his desk, she knows that the waft of bad breath from him will be so overwhelming that she anticipates nausea.
These situations may come across as funny. Nonethless they do occur and good oral hygiene is the answer to all teething troubles.
Demystifying oral/dental hygiene and care
Just brushing is not enough. Factors like diet etc play a major role too.
"The concept of personal oral hygiene and care is still new in India," says Dr Meena Kulkarni, a professor at a dental college in Pune and practicing dentist.
"For example, if we tell a patient to take an X-ray of her teeth, she may not do so thinking that there is nothing 'currently' wrong with my teeth. However, what she fails to realise is that X-ray reports such as these, can be documented, and be used for later references, when a problem may actually occur," she adds.
A good sense of hygiene, awareness of what to eat, dental habits and regular checkups all constitute for good oral hygiene.
Your daily routine
Dr Sonal Arora, a practicing dentist with her own clinic in Mumbai, suggests some basic, yet important personal dental care tips, which involve three essential steps:
Regular brushing: Brush your teeth at least twice daily -- morning and night.
Flossing: Floss your teeth only once, especially before bed time. Flossing ensures your mouth has been cleared up properly.
Floss is meant to clean the tooth surface. It's a misconception that it can be used on the gums. In fact, flossing is not good for the gums and overuse of it can lacerate or damage the gums.
Antiseptic mouthwash: Use a good antiseptic mouthwash twice a day. Rinse your mouth with a capful of mouthwash or as written on the label; this can be done morning and night.
These three basic steps ensure complete and proper dental care and hygiene, which everyone can practice at home.
How to floss
Preferably use waxed floss, which is smoother to use.
i. Gently slide it between two teeth.
ii. Tilt the floss in one direction/angle, not just up and down-encircle the border of the tooth. This will clear out all the deposits between the teeth.
iii. This has to be done for every tooth.
iv. Always remember never to overuse floss or floss too much; else they can hurt your gums.
"Some people may not be comfortable flossing or may find it a tedious process. For such cases, one can purchase floss holders from any chemist. Floss holders help you to floss with ease. But with time, a person who is used to flossing his or her teeth, can floss with ease," adds Dr Arora.
If you need further assistance for a proper flossing technique, your dentist shall be more than happy to show you the correct way.
How to brush
i. Plain horizontal to and fro brushing is not enough.
ii. Ideally you should hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and brush three teeth at a time, with a slight horizontal movement and then you move the brush vertically. Then you shift to the next three teeth.
iii. Don't let any deposit accumulate along the gums.
As simple as this may sound, you can learn the correct technique of brushing your teeth from your dentist!
A visit to the dentist
Usually there are two kinds of people who visit a doctor -- someone who is having a health problem or those who are not. For both cases, the treatment is completely different.
For a person who is suffering from a dental ailment, it can be diagnosed and accordingly a proper treatment can be given. Whereas for the latter, a routine check up can be done which entails proper guidance, check ups, suggested cleanings and more.
A dentist will examine your teeth, gums and the surrounding tissues.
"One should ideally visit a dentist for a routine check up at least minimum three months, to maximum six months," suggests Dr Arora or in some cases, "between six months to a year" suggests Dr Kulkarni. Some check ups can be as simple as tarter and plaque removal.
Dr Kulkarni further adds, "There is a dental procedure known as oral prophylaxis or cleaning and prevention, which clears the accumulated plaque that cannot be removed by the usual brushing. This is followed by an ultrasonic cleaning, whereby a thin stream of water jet is used for cleaning up the spaces and the surface of the teeth. After the water jet cleanses the teeth of its plaque it is then followed by a high-speed brush, which polishes the teeth. This is a painless, harmless, and a faster process. In fact, it also comes with auto cleave clips, with completely sterilised tips that is used for every new patient."
Get your dental jargon right!
Plaque: Generally a layer forms on the teeth after eight to ten hours of brushing. Even though this layer accumulates due to faulty brushing, this can be removed by the person in the initial stages through proper brushing.
Tartar: If the plaque settles on the teeth for several days then it turns into a hard substance called tarter. One cannot remove tartar by plain brushing. You will have to undergo a proper clean up of the teeth.
Tooth decay/cavity: In general, there are millions of bacteria in your mouth. Due to improper brushing, there is food lodged between the gaps of your teeth, resulting in bacteria to act on it.
Bacteria cause acidic breakdown of food and this in turn increases the acidic content in the mouth. This acidic formation further leads to corrosion of the teeth and the teeth becomes black or what results in tooth decay or cavity.
Dos and Don'ts
"Most of the health tips for dental care are diet related," says Dr Arora. She suggests some tips:
Don'ts
i. Try to cut down on starchy, refined, excessively sweet and sticky carbohydrates like -- chocolate, pastries, jams, and most fast food items like pizzas and burgers.
ii. Immediate changes of hot and cold food or beverages expose the nerves to extreme temperatures, which does not give enough time to the nerves to adjust to the new temperature.
This should be avoided, as it can be harmful to the teeth and gums.
iii. Aerated beverages-colas are a strict no-no!
iv. Needless to say smoking is extremely harmful for the mouth. It forms a nicotine stain on the teeth, which in turn damages the lining in the mouth and one starts getting patches in the insides of the cheek or mouth.
v. Never use tooth picks. It is not a good habit, because they dig into the gums, which in turn results in more food particles being stuck, thereby causing more damage to the teeth.
Dos
i. Maintain the usual personal dental hygiene and care as mentioned above.
ii. Eat fruits and fibrous foods-like apple, cucumbers and carrots. Add some of these fruits or vegetables into your salad. These mechanically clean up the biting surface of your teeth.
iii. Chew on sugar-free gum. When you chew on sugar-free gum, there is an increase in saliva in the mouth. As a result, the acidic content in the saliva is reduced, which in turn does a mechanical cleaning of your teeth.
