Health> Stress related skin disorders

Text by: Tanya Munshi
You’re constantly on the go. With every minute counting, your need to complete everything in the given hour makes the stress levels in your body to shoot up. Little do you realize that stress not only leads to high blood pressure, but it can also lead to certain kind of skin disorders as well.
The skin is one of the most delicate organs of the body. It reacts immediately to change of temperature as well as to an experiment of a new beauty product. So imagine what high levels of stress can do to your skin.
1
What causes stress related skin disorders?
“Factors such as mental tension, emotional stress, over exposure to sunlight and consumption of alcohol and cigarette can aggravate stress related skin disorders,” says Dr. Sailesh B Mehta, a Mumbai based general physician. Other factors that lead to skin rashes are poor ventilation and inadequate drying up of sweat that can eventually lead to skin infections.
2
Psoriasis and Eczema
The skin disorder sets in when the epithelial cells of the tissues start multiplying rapidly, as a result the blood circulation does not reach the new cells and the same cells start dying out and start forming a top scaly layer – like white scales. At times, your skin surface may tend to be itchy and if you scratch, it leaves white marks on the area.
One of the main results of stress related skin disorders are psoriasis and eczema. When there is an increase in stress levels in the human body, especially mental stress levels, it can aggravate psoriasis and eczema.
3
Solutions
~ Consult your family doctor and/ skin specialist
~ Consult your doctor for vitamin supplements
~ Include seasonal fruits in your diet
~ Exercise regularly, sweating during exercise can help in clearing out the body pores allowing your skin to breathe
~ Adopt a positive attitude towards life
~ Plan your day accordingly in order to reduce stress
4
It is a myth that air conditioning promotes skin disorders. Nonetheless, you must always ensure that no matter how long you spend in office, you must give your skin the chance to breathe fresh air by taking a walk after during the break or going for morning or evening walks. The good news is, both psoriasis and eczema are not contagious, and can be controlled if you keep those stress levels in check!

Health> Contact Dermatitis

Text by: Tanya Munshi
The next time you plan on buying cheap junk jewelry, think again. You never know what your skin may react to, so why experiment? It doesn’t matter if you pay a few bucks extra, as long as you don’t invite skin infections.

What is contact dermatitis?
One of the other kinds of skin rashes that can occur is through the contact of metal. “If you are allergic to a particular metallic substance and get rashes that is known as contact dermatitis” says Dr. Sailesh B Mehta, a Mumbai based general physician. Contact dermatitis is a reaction of the skin tissues that causes irritation, along with pain, swelling, redness and heat in the affected area. If you wore cheap junk jewelry and you’re skin showed signs like this, it’s best to discard the jewelry.

How does it happen?
“Many a times, dirt, dust, pollution stick to your skin with the sweat. If you wear a poor quality metal, the skin rubs with the metal along with the pollutants, that eventually give rise to skin rashes,” says, Dr. Mehta. The pollutants in this case are known as allergens that cause a reaction on the skin.

Outdoors
This mostly occurs among those people who have field job profiles and are more exposed to sunlight and pollutants. Never reuse the same clothes that you have worn for an entire day. The bacteria from the sweat, coupled with the allergens can aggravate the skin allergies.

Solutions
1. Consult your family doctor and/ skin specialist.
2. Never skip a bath
3. Use a soap recommended by skin specialists
4. Use medicated talcum powders to absorb the sweat and alcohol based deodorants that can kill germs produced during sweating
5. Avoid scratching on the affected area, as this may cause the allergy to spread to the other parts of your skin.
6. Apply cooling lotions like Lacto Calamine on the affected area
7. Try applying cold compress on the affected area to soothe the itching and burning sensation
8. Always buy jewelry from authorized showrooms, as they normally do not compromise on the quality of the metal.

Right from the time I stepped into Hyderabad, the weather was a pleasant surprise. I had visited this city in early August and the timing was perfect. The monsoon showers made its appearance every now and then, ensuring that the city didn’t have to dwell in the heat for too long.
1
My week long trip was the best and the most fun filled one I had in the land of the Nawabs. I know it’s quite an old and a clichéd saying, but then the city of Hyderabad is more than 400 years old that boasts of a balance between traditional and modernity. More popular for its pearls, the Char Minar, Golconda Fort, Hi-Tech City and of course, how could we forget the delicious biryani, Hyderabad is a one stop destination for all.
But I am keen on showcasing Hyderabad in a new light, in a way I discovered it on my own. In fact, this city has many other reasons to be famous for and I will bear testimony for them all.
2
Churi Bazar
Let’s begin with my favourite part of the city that has left a wanting in me. I am talking about the famous Churi Bazar, situated just next to the famous Char Minar. It’s a complete stretch of road that exclusively sells bangles of exuberant variety. This is a famous haunt for the lasses of Hyderabad to shop for bangles and trinkets. These bangles range from lacquer, glass, plastic and metal, with simple to bold designs. Its amazing to see the riot of colours displayed here that will definitely confuse you as to what to buy and what not to! While you shop to your heart’s content don’t forget to bargain and remember that these shops open a little late by around 11:30 in the morning. So no need to rush through the day, enjoy it like you would sip a mildly brewed tea.
3
During Ramzan and Id this place exhibits its true essence of the festivities. With the famous Karachi Mehendi known to adorn the hands of the bride on her special day, trinkets, zaris and bangles, this is THE place for traditional Muslim wedding needs. In fact, I picked up some trendy glass bangles that will compliment both ethnic and casual wear at work and home.
4
Pearls
Pearl shopping is the next best thing that you can do in Hyderabad. It would be sacrilege to not indulge in some pearl shopping, that too in a town known for its fine quality of white, coloured and treated pearls. Ladies, please ensure your husbands are in close proximity when you go pearl shopping, as the prices are simply to die for. Apart from a host of designs with pearls and gem stones, don’t miss the pearl junk jewellery at Jagadamba Pearls.
5
Places like Princess Pearls, Jagadamba Pearls, and Krishna Pearls are genuine places to buy string and readymade pearls. String pearls will be cheaper as they will be beaded on thin nylon threads with a hook. You can either choose to wear it as is, or get it done in a design of your choice from your trusted jeweller.
6
Thanks to the IT and growing corporate sector in Hyderabad, the city has generous doses of malls from Shoppers’ Stop, Lifestyle and Hyderabad Central. Of course, how could we forget movie halls, lounges and pubs that form the very existence of the night life.
7
Eating out
But we weren’t too keen on the malls, but a movie? Yes! Why, after a sumptuous Thai meal at the Prasad’s Food Court, we headed for straight for Superman Returns, in 3D IMAX situated in Prasad’s itself. The halls are fantastic, and very impressive as per international standards.
8
On another night, my husband and I made a beeline to one of the happening pubs in town—Bottles and Chimney. The place is well done up, spacious, with good music, though with a small dance floor. The sofas are nice and cushy that was utterly relaxing after an entire day of sight seeing and window shopping. Rounds of beer, Virgin Coladas and Chicken Chilly were a perfect treat for our tummies.
9
Sight Seeing
The city of Hyderabad is also famous for—The Salarjung Museum. This is an interesting place where you can actually spend the entire day at leisure looking at the exhibits. The best part about the museum is a clock which has a little soldier that makes an appearance every hour to strike the gong that number of times. With a seating area in front of the clock and two huge LCD screens, this place is packed at 12:00 noon to get a better glimpse of the little soldier who’ll appear in time to strike the gong 12 times. There is so much of history and knowledge stored here, that I think this is the best museum I have been to and would like to pay a visit again.
10
Ramoji Film City was the star attraction at Hyderabad and I suggest you should squeeze a day to freak out here. The rain gods were extra generous the day we planned a trip there, but then there is so much to do and see there, a little bit rain can’t spoil the fun; in fact, it adds to the ambience.
11
On reaching Ramoji, you need to buy an entry pass which offers a guided tour in the film city and a pick up and drop at the main entrance. This largest film city in Asia is surely going to mesmerize you, when you see how beautifully this place has been done up and maintained. Don’t be surprised to see the red London buses coming to pick you up for the guided tour; the journey is fun and exciting.
12
From Taj Mahal, Vrindavan Gardens, dhabas and much more, you will find all of them here. The well manicured lawns, red flowers lining the pot-hole free roads transport you to a foreign location. The guided bus tour will also take you to a railway station, which has a real train engine. This railway station is in fact a set used to give that realistic effect when a hero and heroine are seen eloping by train. And would you believe it? Most of the architecture at the film city is made of plaster of Paris!
13
At Ramoji, you can also entertain yourself with a variety of games, rides, magic shows and stunt shows held in the in house auditoriums at fixed timings. For lunch you could feast on the delicious butter chicken and garlic naan at the in house restaurant of the film city.
14
On another evening, visiting the Golconda Fort was an enriching experience. The fort is built with such modernity, that it makes us ponder as to how advanced in thinking and logic they were back in history.
15
If you clapped your hands at the portico at the entrance of the fort or the Fateh Darwaza, the ceilings are created in such a way, that the clap echoes almost 200 meters up to the palace. Hence, in case of any danger or to pass an important message, the messenger didn’t have to run up all the way, all he had to do was just clap at the portico and call out the message which could be clearly heard by the royalty up there.
16
The Sound and Light Show at the Golconda Fort, is held in two languages—English and Telugu, just after sunset. The English narration is by none other than the legendry Amitabh Bacchan who along with the tunes of the famous gazal singer Jagjit Singh takes you along the story of how this fort came to into existence. In this show you can see the lights being displayed in various hues at every nook and corner of the palace, matching with the narration, thereby bringing the ruins back to life.
17
The Lumbini Park is another added attraction in Hyderabad. It may not be as jazzy as what you may have seen abroad, but the laser show is definitely enjoyable. An ideal place to go with your family, to sit out in the open enjoying the lights and water fountains dance to the tunes of popular Bollywood tracks.
18
The Char Minar of course will be a part of your travel itinerary. In fact, when you plan on visiting the Churi Bazar, leave a little early and drop by at the Minar once, as it shuts down by sunset. Once you’ve climbed up till the first two floors, you can see the entire skyline of the city. The stairs are extremely narrow and winding and one must be careful while climbing down.
19
Biryani
Now coming to my favourite part of the trip—feasting on kaathi kebabs and chicken biryani at Paradise Persis. Initially I always felt that people exaggerated when they spoke about this place, but once I personally paid a visit to the restaurant I was really happy to be wrong. The spread and the quantity for the price were amazing and the meats just melted in our mouths. I can assure you that you wouldn’t mind binging even if your tummy was full. In fact, our friends went to the extent of packing Paradise biryani in the afternoon when we were headed back for home.
20
Another place for some real tasty Chinese is at Palace Heights on Abids. The interesting thing about this restaurant is that it is located on the top most floor, offering you a view of both the old and the new Hyderabad city. Good service, nawabi ambience and delicious food constitute Palace Heights. It seemed like a popular restaurant as even on a weekday afternoon this place had a good deal of clientele.
21
This city is lovely; it has a certain charm of its own which has got me hooked to it. It’s not as rushed as in metropolises of Mumbai and Delhi, but then you get the best of both worlds here. To get enchanted and enjoy a good break in the city, Hyderabad is certainly a good choice.

Beauty> Say Aqua for Healthy Skin

Text by: Tanya Munshi
The next time you feel like taking a sip of cola or caffeine, just go for a bottle of water. There is nothing like drinking the elixir of life. Did you know that water is the most natural way to treat any skin problems? That’s why skin experts recommend that drinking at least six to eight glasses of water daily is ideal for healthy skin.
1
Hydrate Your Skin
When you don’t drink enough water, your skin tends to get dehydrated. This is the first factor that causes your skin to suffer. Water helps in cleansing your body, clearing toxins, which in turn give you a clearer complexion. Drinking lots of water help in maintaining that glow on your face.
2
Keep Skin Soft And Supple
Water consists of alkaline with pH 7.3, which is useful in preventing dehydration.
It is also essential in creating sebum from the sebaceous glands, thereby keeping your skin soft and supple. Excessive dryness of skin can result the skin to loose its elasticity, which in turn can causes premature wrinkles.
3
Clearer Skin
When your body receives enough water daily, your problems of constipation reduces drastically. This in turn prevents you from getting acne. Water helps in transporting nutrients and oxygen to all parts of your bodies and the healthiness reflects on your skin. Water keeps your pores clog free that helps to maintain clearer skin.
4
H20 In Your Diet
~ While you should have six to eight glasses of water daily and even more, there are other ways of incorporating H2O into your diet.
~ Start your day with a warm glass of water with a dash of lime juice and a teaspoon full of honey. This helps in clearing out toxins from your body.
~ Have seasonal fruits, especially water melon and grapes that are rich in water.
~ Sip in lemon tea, iced tea, lemon drink or milk shake—whatever it takes to send water into your system is a very good habit.

Fashion Accessories> What's your Hat Style?

Text by: Tanya Munshi
Here's a style tip to make you really stand out in a crowd: get hold of a hat. Yes, there's nothing quite like a funky cap, a jazzy hat, or a classy beret to add to your style quotient.
Besides offering protection from the elements, hats have acquired a fashion status of their own.
New York-based fashion designer Pooja Munshi says in India, a hat is more of a personal statement. But before venturing out to buy one, here's the lowdown on these fashion accessories and how to carry them off.
1
How to choose
There are a variety of styles available in the market for you to choose from. Munshi particularly recommends berets (caps with no brim or bill, made of soft cloth), straw hats and sports caps.
And remember, there are hats for every face cut. "Adjust your hairstyle and look at your face structure to see what hat goes well with your face," says Munshi.
1
Here's how
~ Round face: Avoid round hats that accentuate the shape of your face. Also avoid brimless hats (without the sides) that fall low on your face. Try hats that are wider than your face and with high brims.
~ Long face: Wear wide hats with curled or loose brims. Avoid narrow-brim hats as this would add length to your face.
~ Oval face: You can experiment with any kind of hat.
~ Square face: Wear asymmetrical hats -- the ones that turn up on one side and are tilted at the other. Try hats that are flat on top.
~ Big face: Wear brimmed hats with a slight fall on the sides.
~ Small face: Try hats with the sides turned upward and away from the face.
1
Balancing act
But the shape of your face is not the only thing to factor in when you choose your hat. Height, weight and some other points need to be remembered as well.
Body frame
~ If you are tall: Wear wide-brimmed hats with a small crown (the top part of your head) to balance your height.
~ Thin: Wear small-brimmed hats with a low crown. Avoid large hats, they tend to make you look smaller.
~ Overweight: Choose hats with the sides rolled upwards.
~ Sharp-nosed: Wear a wide front hat, with an upturned back brim. This will draw attention away from your nose and balance your face.
~ Short-nosed: Get yourself a hat that is either large or medium with a slightly droopy front.
~ Spectacled: Choose a hat with an upturned front.
1
The perfect fit
Remember, choosing the right hat needs some time and patience. Wear one only if you are comfortable with it, else it's best to give it a miss.
The occasion can also dictate your hat style. Lavish open-air parties during the day can call for a stylish hat, while a straw or cloth hat is fine for a date at a beach cafe.
1
Some tips
~ Try several hats to see which fits you best. Most hats come in the range of 21 to 22 inches for women.
~ Tilt your hat to either side till you get the perfect position. Check it out from all angles. It should look good even from behind.
~ Hats are available in small, medium and large, as well as one size fits all.
~ Your hat should not be too tight or too loose.
~ Match your hat to your bags and shoes.
~ Those with long hair can tie a ponytail at the nape of your neck before wearing a hat.
~ For those with short hair, simply pull your hair back behind your ears before wearing a hat.
1
Availability
~ If you're visiting beaches like in Goa, get a cool straw hat.
~ Visiting Himachal or the hills? Pick up the traditional woollen rimless caps for a different style statement.
~ Certain lifestyle and fashion stores in the country offer a range of hats and caps.
~ Sports caps are readily available in most sports outlets like Nike and Reebok showrooms.
1
Some dos and don'ts
~ Always remove your hat when you are indoors.
~ Hats should be removed during the national anthem, saluting/passing your national flag, outdoor weddings, dedications, meetings and funerals.
1
Care
~ Get a hat stand or hang your hats in your closet.
~ Don't keep any heavy objects on top of your hats as they will ruin the shape.
~ Always keeps hats separate, either in the box or keep them in separate cloth covers.
~ You can clean your hats with a fabric cleaner and a soft cloth.
~ Use a soft brush to dust your hats. Use a dark-coloured brush for dark shades and light-coloured brush for light ones.
~ Clean your hat brushes after every use.
~ Never use a hair dryer to dry your hat if it gets wet. Let the hat dry naturally, by keeping it in the balcony or window.
~ Keep your hat in a cool and dry place.
